Have you heard about the potential therapeutic effects fennel can have on menopausal symptoms? A study of 90 women experiencing menopausal symptoms was carried out to measure the benefits if any of fennel. In just 8 weeks those taking fennel saw positive results.
The study was a triple-blind trial, which keeps the details secret from the participants as well as those administering the intervention, and the committee of researchers in charge of evaluating the outcomes of the experiment.
The study split the 90 women into 2 groups of 45, one group received the treatment and the other group received a placebo.
The treatment group were given 100-milligram capsules of fennel twice a day, every day for 8 weeks, the other group were given a placebo.
Using the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), the researchers compared the results of the treatment group with those of the placebo group at 4, 8, and 10-week intervals after the intervention began.
The study revealed significantly lower MRS scores in patients who had received the treatment compared with the placebo group. fennel was found to be “an effective and safe treatment to reduce menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women without serious side effects.”
Menopause Rating Scale measures the following:
- psychological symptoms: 4 symptoms: depressed, irritable, anxious, exhausted
- somato-vegetative symptoms: 4 symptoms: sweating/flush, cardiac complaints, sleeping disorders, joint & muscle complaints
- urogenital symptoms: 3 symptoms: sexual problems, urinary complaints, vaginal dryness
